Conization and cervical letz

This is a surgical procedure to remove part of the cervix.

What are the indications?

This is a surgical procedure to remove part of the cervix.
Cervical conization is performed on women who have been diagnosed with a precancerous or premalignant lesion on the cervix. These lesions appear because of a persistent infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is acquired during sexual intercourse.

Objective of its realization

The objective of cervical conization is twofold:
  • Treatment of premalignant lesions of the cervix, whose spontaneous evolution, in some cases, may pose a risk of developing cervical cancer. Therefore, it is a preventive treatment for this type of cancer.
  • Definitive diagnosis of the lesion and, in exceptional cases, it allows ruling out the existence of a very early-stage cervical cancer.

What is the procedure?

The term conization means the removal in a “conical” shape of the external part of the cervix or exocervix (base of the cone) and an internal part corresponding to the canal or endocervix (apex of the cone).

Conización

In this procedure, a very thin wire in the shape of a loop called a diathermic loop is used. It is connected to a high frequency electric current generator. This allows the affected area on the cervix to be removed with great precision. Due to this high precision and the small diameter of the wire used, the damage caused to the normal tissues surrounding the affected area is minimal. The blood vessels coagulate simultaneously, reducing or preventing bleeding caused by the procedure.

Conización

Conization is painless since in our clinic it is performed under anesthetic sedation or loco-regional anesthesia. This requires the participation of an Anesthesiologist. Thus, it is an outpatient procedure that requires 2-3 hours stay.
